Sunken Ships and the Lure of Lost Treasures

The Oregon Coast has witnessed numerous shipwrecks over the centuries, due to its treacherous waters and unforgiving coastline. These shipwrecks have left behind a treasure trove of stories and legends, many of which involve lost treasures waiting to be discovered.

The Wreck of the Peter Iredale

One of the most famous shipwrecks on the Oregon Coast is the Peter Iredale, a four-masted bark that ran aground near Fort Stevens in 1906. The ship was carrying a cargo of wheat and barley, as well as a large amount of gold coins. According to legend, the gold coins were never recovered, and they are still buried somewhere beneath the sands of Clatsop Beach.

The Spanish Galleon Wreck

Another popular legend involves a Spanish galleon that is said to have sunk off the coast of Cannon Beach in the 16th century. The galleon was reportedly carrying a vast treasure of gold and silver, which was lost when the ship went down in a storm. Over the years, numerous expeditions have been launched to find the wreck of the Spanish galleon, but none have been successful.

Buried Gold and the Dreams of Fortune

In addition to sunken ships, the Oregon Coast is also home to numerous tales of buried gold. These stories often involve pirates, outlaws, and other colorful characters who are said to have hidden their treasures along the coast.

Captain Kidd's Treasure

One of the most enduring legends of buried gold on the Oregon Coast involves the infamous pirate Captain Kidd. Kidd is said to have buried a treasure chest filled with gold and jewels somewhere along the coast, but the exact location of the treasure has never been found.

The Lost Treasure of the Blue Bucket Mine

Another popular legend tells the story of the Lost Treasure of the Blue Bucket Mine. The Blue Bucket Mine was a gold mine that was located in the Coast Range mountains of Oregon. In the early 1900s, a group of miners is said to have discovered a rich vein of gold in the mine but was forced to abandon the mine after being attacked by Native Americans. The miners are said to have hidden their gold somewhere near the mine, but the treasure has never been found.

Lost Cities and the Mysteries of the Past

The Oregon Coast is also home to several legends of lost cities. These cities are said to have been built by ancient civilizations that lived along the coast centuries ago. The ruins of these cities are said to be hidden in the forests, mountains, and dunes of the coast.

The Lost City of Atlantis

The most famous of the lost cities on the Oregon Coast is the Lost City of Atlantis. According to legend, Atlantis was a great and powerful city that was located in the Pacific Ocean. In the 16th century, Spanish explorer Juan de Fuca is said to have discovered the ruins of Atlantis off the coast of Oregon. However, no physical evidence of Atlantis has ever been found.

The Lost City of Yaquina

Another popular legend involves the Lost City of Yaquina. Yaquina was a large and prosperous city that is said to have been located near the present-day town of Newport. In the 18th century, a powerful earthquake is said to have destroyed Yaquina, and the city was lost to the sea. Over the years, several attempts have been made to find the ruins of Yaquina, but none have been successful.

The Oregon Coast is a land of mystery and allure, where the whispers of the past linger in the wind. The tales of buried treasure, lost cities, and sunken ships have captivated imaginations for centuries. While some of these stories may be nothing more than legends, they add to the charm and mystique of this beautiful and rugged coastline.
