Perception and Language in a More-Than-Human World: Embodied Cognition, Interspecies Communication, and the Future of Environmentalism
![Jese Leos](https://cooking.nicksucre.com/author/jake-carter.jpg)
Our current environmental crisis is rooted in a narrow and anthropocentric understanding of perception and language. We tend to think of perception as a purely human activity, and of language as a uniquely human capacity. This understanding has led us to believe that we are the only beings who can experience the world and communicate about it, and that the environment is simply a resource for our use.

Recent work in embodied cognition, interspecies communication, and the posthumanities is challenging this narrow understanding of perception and language. Embodied cognition shows that our perception of the world is shaped by our bodies and our environment. Interspecies communication shows that animals communicate with each other in complex and sophisticated ways. And the posthumanities shows that the distinction between humans and nonhumans is not as clear-cut as we once thought.
These new ways of thinking about perception and language have the potential to transform our relationship with the environment. If we recognize that our perception of the world is shaped by our bodies and our environment, then we can no longer claim that our understanding of the environment is objective. And if we recognize that animals communicate with each other in complex and sophisticated ways, then we can no longer ignore their voices in our environmental decision-making.
A more-than-human understanding of perception and language has the potential to create a more sustainable and just future. If we recognize that the environment is not simply a resource for our use, but is instead a complex and dynamic system of which we are a part, then we will be more likely to protect it. And if we recognize that animals have their own experiences and perspectives, then we will be more likely to treat them with respect and compassion.
Embodied Cognition
Embodied cognition is a theory that argues that our cognition is shaped by our bodies and our environment. This theory challenges the traditional view of cognition as a disembodied process that takes place in the brain. Instead, embodied cognition argues that our cognition is embodied, or embedded in our bodies and our environment.
Embodied cognition has important implications for our understanding of perception. If our perception of the world is shaped by our bodies and our environment, then our perception is not objective. Instead, our perception is subjective, or shaped by our own unique experiences and perspectives.
This has implications for our understanding of the environment. If our perception of the environment is subjective, then there is no such thing as an objective understanding of the environment. Instead, our understanding of the environment is always shaped by our own unique experiences and perspectives.
Interspecies Communication
Interspecies communication is the study of communication between different species. This field of study has shown that animals communicate with each other in complex and sophisticated ways. Animals use a variety of vocalizations, gestures, and chemical signals to communicate with each other.
Interspecies communication has important implications for our understanding of language. If animals can communicate with each other in complex and sophisticated ways, then language is not a uniquely human capacity. Instead, language is a capacity that is shared by many different species.
This has implications for our understanding of the environment. If animals can communicate with each other, then they have their own unique experiences and perspectives. This means that we need to take their voices into account when we make environmental decisions.
The Posthumanities
The posthumanities is a field of study that challenges the traditional distinction between humans and nonhumans. This field of study argues that the distinction between humans and nonhumans is not as clear-cut as we once thought.
The posthumanities has important implications for our understanding of perception and language. If the distinction between humans and nonhumans is not as clear-cut as we once thought, then we need to rethink our understanding of these concepts.
